STEVEN BARMACH, MD
I was born and grew up in
Cherry Hill
,
NJ
, about 20 minutes outside of
Philadelphia
. One of the turning points in my life came at the age of ten, when I decided to become a vegetarian in support of animal rights. Along with my fondness of animals, I developed a love for the outdoors, spending several summers in
Maine
canoeing and hiking. I attended
Duke
University
as an undergraduate, where I majored in Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering. Most importantly, Duke first exposed me to the field of emergency medicine. I obtained my EMT certification there, and eventually became the Director of Duke EMS. Prior to returning to
Philadelphia
to attend
Jefferson
Medical
College
, I deferred for a year and worked as a medic for
Durham
County
EMS
and taught the EMT curriculum. While it was nice being close to home for my four years of medical school, I am very excited about returning to Duke and
Durham
. I look forward to the next three years with the Emergency Medicine team.

JOSEPH BORAWSKI, MD
I was born and raised on
Long Island
,
NY
and attended
Colgate
University
where I majored in American History and Biology. After graduating in 1996, I began my graduate studies at
Columbia
University
’s
School
of
Public Health
where I earned my M.P.H. in Epidemiology in 1998. Unsure of definitive career path, I worked as a Research Associate at the NY Neurological Institute working as part of the Northern Manhattan Stroke Study until deciding to pursue medicine at
Albany
Medical
College
in 2000. It was during this time that I accepted a scholarship from the US Navy in the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) which officially began my Navy medical career. After completing a Transitional Internship at
Naval
Medical
Center
in
Portsmouth
,
VA
I received orders to 2d Marine Division out of
Camp
Lejeune
where I have spent the last four years as a General Medical Officer with the US Marine Corps. Throughout this time my wife Kristy has been a Resident at Duke in the Division of Urology, so we are both thrilled that I will be joining the Duke family! In our spare time, we both enjoy kayaking, fishing, golf and cycling.

LINDSEY CALEY, MD
I am representing the West Coast! I was born and raised in
Seattle
,
WA
and I still consider it my true home. That being said, I am so excited to live in
North Carolina
where there is plenty green foliage and accessible coastline! I love to be outdoors hiking, backpacking, skiing, running, and biking. Completing undergrad at
Colorado
State
was extremely conducive to all my interests, and I majored in Health and Exercise Science. I took a year off after college to move home and work before heading further east to
Nebraska
, where I attended medical school at
Creighton
University
. Although
Nebraska
isn’t the most exotic of places, it allowed me to travel to some; I visited
Kenya
,
Peru
and the
Dominican Republic
in med school. I love to travel and am interested in international health. Moving to
Durham
for residency completes my eastward migration across the
US
. I am thrilled to be joining the Duke EM family and look forward to exploring NC!

DOUGLAS LYSSY, MD
It has been a long and winding road to emergency medicine here at Duke. Originally from
Texas
I spent a number of years working as a firefighter with the San Antonio Fire Department. Making my way through the ranks I worked on a truck company as a firefighter, on an ambulance as a paramedic and ultimately on an engine as a company officer and lieutenant. My time in
EMS
as a paramedic led me to return to school and complete my undergraduate training at UTSA and then to medical school at the Yale School of Medicine. Having some interest in business and experience in management, I decided to apply to the joint MD/MBA program with the Yale School of Management. I spent the next 5 cold years in New Haven CT battling snow, eating pizza and learning about medicine and finance. During my last year of the joint program I was offered a unique opportunity to work on Wall Street in investment banking. Please hold your tomato throwing until after my biography. After a couple of years in Manhattan enjoying the perks of high finance I discovered medicine is where I belong and decided to leave the glitz and glamour for some blood and vomit. Who could have guessed during my residency interviews that back at the office Wall Street was collapsing, sending the world economy into a tailspin. Even through all that I still consider myself a firefighter and get the urge to kick in a door whenever I smell smoke. I have many hobbies outside of medicine such as mountain biking, investing, racing motorcycles and cooking, but the center of my world is my four year old little girl Katie Lynn. She has curly hair like her grandma and blue eyes like her mom. I am now looking forward to learning and training at Duke.

SCOTT NELSON, MD
I’m one of those people that say they’re from
New Orleans
, but they’re really from one of the suburbs. Come on – would you really know where
Kenner
was? After spending 18 years in
New Orleans
, I attended LSU for undergrad – chance of rain….NEVER! I then returned to NOLA for medical school at
LSU
Health
Sciences
Center
. In my 3rd week of medical school, Hurricane Katrina decided to rough up the city a bit, so we moved to
Baton Rouge
for a year. Once the dust settled in
New Orleans
, we picked up where things left off. At the beginning of my second year, I met the woman of my dreams and future wife, Meghan. We got married the week after Match Day – an awesome way to celebrate matching at Duke! When its time to play, I love hitting the golf course or batting cages. My wife is quite the athlete herself so I’m sure we’ll be exploring the outdoors of
North Carolina
. We are both looking forward to starting our marriage in
Durham
and being a part of the Duke Emergency Medicine posse. Don’t worry…we’ll still be boilin’ crawdads and washin’ em down with a few Abitas!

MARK TOYER, MD
I grew up amongst the whales, sandy beaches and sub-par sports franchises of
San Diego
,
CA
. Upon graduating from high school, I left my sandals and surfboard behind to study up north at the ultra-conservative
University
of
California
at
Berkeley
. After completing my studies while being surrounded by student protests, I decided to head east to the tropics of
Boston
. There, I have pursued a MBA and completed a short internship on Wall Street during medical school. I am excited to train in emergency medicine at Duke while experiencing a new region of the country.
