Class of 2010

CURTIS CARRIKER, MD

I was born in Lubbock, TX, and then grew up in the eastern suburbs of Dallas, TX, where I became the huge sports fan I am today by following the local pro teams.  The Cowboys and Mavericks are my favorites.  Due to my intense dislike of the color burnt orange, I wound up in Lubbock at Texas Tech University (Bob Knight's current home), where I received my Bachelor's of Science in Microbiology.  During my undergrad years I met my beautiful and supportive wife, Salina, and we have been married 6 years as of 2007.  I spent 3 years on indoor air research, plenty of time to decide medicine was the career for me.  I also attended medical school at Texas Tech, where my exposure and interest in emergency medicine began.  I am excited to join the Duke University EM program, and hope to find time to see the Duke Blue Devil basketball team in action.  When not at the hospital, my wife and I occupy our time with our two dogs, and we also like to attend sporting events, try new restaurants, watch movies and spend time with friends and family.

ADAM CHANDLER, MD

I was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and have lived there most of my life.  I finished my undergraduate work at the University of Central Arkansas with a B.S. in Health Sciences and continued my education by earning an M.S. in Physical Therapy at the same university in 1999.  I practiced as a Physical Therapist for a few years before deciding that I really wanted to become a physician.  I began medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 2003 and have not looked back.  My interest include: kayaking, fly-fishing and most any outdoor activity.  I have a wonderful wife named Ashley and a delightful 1 year old daughter named Brady.  The opportunity to train in Emergency Medicine at Duke is tremendous and my family and I are thrilled to be moving to Durham.

CHAD COCHRAN, MD

I was born and raised in the city Billings on the plains of beautiful Montana where most of my family still lives.  At the age of 18 I left home to attend the University of Montana in Missoula.  After one year there, I realized I was not yet ready for college.  Instead I got a job working in a warehouse and traveled around the Western half of the US playing beach volleyball.  I am an avid outdoorsman and enjoy fly fishing, hiking, camping and hunting.  I also love to play basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, and racquetball.  In 1999 I married my wonderful wife Suzie and we now have 4 children.  I went back to college at the age of 26 and received a bS in Chemistry with an emphasis in biological chemistry from the University of Montana.  We then packed up the family and moved to Seattle for medical school.  Although we love the West, and Montana is our home, we were looking for a new cultural experience during residency and are ecstatic to be moving out to beautiful North Carolina to join the Duke Emergency Medicine family.

ANNE-CAROLINE NORMAN, MD

I am thrilled to be staying at Duke for my residency in emergency medicine.  I completed my undergraduate degree at Stanford University in 2000, and trekked around the Andes in Bolivia , Peru and Ecuador before starting Duke Med.  I completed a combined MD, MBA degree at Duke, which included working in venture capital and start-up firms, and I also spent a year doing research at the NIH.  For fun, I love to brew beer, play tennis, and horse around with my daughter, Charlotte.

CHARLES OCHELLO, MD

I was born in Lafayette, Louisiana and spent most of my childhood hanging around the ballpark.  I fell in love with football in high school and played a year of college football at Tulane University.  I finished up my undergraduate work at LSU in Baton Rouge and coached high school football for two years during my time there.  I then headed to the Big Easy to attend medical school at LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans.  I have spent summers over the years in San Diego, Italy, and Greece and love to travel.  I enjoy live music, SEC college football, and good old Southern cooking.

NICHOLAS STEINOUR, MD

I was born and raised in Gettysburg , Pennsylvania .  After high school, I went to Baylor University where I earned a degree in psychology.  From there, I relocated to South Beach where I attended the University of Miami school of medicine.  Along the way, I developed a love for spicy food and outdoor activities.  I enjoy running, wakeboarding, kite surfing, and most IM sports.  I will be spending my time before residency exploring Vietnam , Bali , Cambodia , Malaysia , Thailand , Ireland , and mainland Europe .  I am very excited to begin the next step of my training as part of the Duke family.

THOMAS VELDHOUSE, MD

I have lived in the Midwest my entire life and now look forward to leaving the cold behind. I was born in Iowa and moved to suburb of Chicago in 4th grade.  I attended the University of Illinois in Champaign for college where I majored in biochemistry (with a minor in bar hopping).  After college I attended a PhD program in pharmacology at Northwestern University .  At NU, I quickly realized that bench science was not where my passions lie and subsequently took the MCAT, making the transition to medical school.  The summer before medical school I went to Spain and ran with the bulls in Pamplona three times.  I attended Rush University in Chicago for medical school where I met my wife.  Unfortunately, she has joined the ranks of the Tarheels, having matched at UNC for ophthalmology (as a U of Illinois alum I harbor a grudge from the championship game of ’05).  In my spare time I enjoy running, golf, poker and working on the gun show at the gym.  I am excited to come to Duke and look forward to meeting ya’ll soon.
