Airway

Emergency airway is one of the most critical skills for the emergency physician.  Our residency program hones airway skills through frequent airway labs using simulators and cadaver material.  In addition to mastering standard laryngoscopy, our residents become accomplished in rescue airway techniques, including laryngeal mask airway, surgical airway, and fiberoptic techniques.  We’ll soon implement video-assisted laryngoscopy in the department during standard clinical care, allowing improved real-time feedback from attendings during resident intubations.  Our outstanding respiratory therapists provide additional fulltime expertise in airway management, including noninvasive techniques such as BiPAP.
At right, attending Alex Limkakeng instructs resident Amanda Barrett in use of the larygneal mask airway.
