International Fellowship

Welcome to Duke International Emergency Medicine.

The cornerstone of our international program is the new Duke International Emergency Medicine Fellowship/ Global Health Residency (Duke IEM/GHRP).  Duke Emergency Medicine has partnered with the Hubert Yeargan Center for Global Health and the Duke Global Health Institute in developing a 2 year training program in global health for emergency physicians.  Emergency Medicine is one of seven specialties involved in the GHRP. The fellow will spend 9 months total in a GHRP location performing clinical care, educating and conducting a project.  Additionally, they will earn a Master of Science in Global Health, and serve as an Emergency Medicine faculty member while at Duke.  Our program is dedicated to training the future leaders in international emergency medicine by prolonged immersion in clinical care, education and research globally combined with master’s level education and emergency medicine growth while at Duke.

We welcome our first fellow, Erica Casey MD, back from her trip to Eldoret , Kenya .  Dr. Casey spent 6 weeks with our ASANTE partners at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital .  She provided clinical care to patients presenting to their Casualty Department and was able to critically evaluate their emergency care delivery systems.  We look forward to global health expertise in educating both emergency medicine residents and other faculty.

In addition to our fellowship, emergency medicine residents interested in International Emergency Care can participate in the International Academic Track.  This academic track allows emergency medicine residents to begin to develop some global health expertise prior to completing their residency training.  EM residents in this track can work with faculty providing international emergency care.  They will join national emergency medicine groups involved in global health and will be involved in our international educational and research projects.
