Duke University ’s departments of Community and Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine now offer two spots for the training of a primary care sports medicine fellow.  One spot is dedicated for EM trained applicants.  Both positions are ACGME approved and will prepare the fellow to sit for the CAQ in primary care sports medicine. Duke Sports Medicine is a leader in sports medicine and this fellowship experience is unique in its variety of team coverage and the broad clinical experience provided.

The one-year fellowship is run under the directorship of Dr Jeffery R Bytomski, DO.  The ED fellow will work an average of 5 shifts a month in the Emergency Department and the remainder of each week will be spent in fellowship activities.  The fellowship curriculum includes time spent in sports medicine clinic, multiple other orthopedic specialty clinics, training rooms and a variety of team coverage.  Fellow team coverage will include high school football, men’s and women’s Division 1 college football, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, volleyball and others at both Duke and North Carolina Central University .  Fellows will travel at times with the teams and provide relevant care both at home and on the road.  Fellows will work closely with both primary care and orthopedic sports medicine physicians during the fellowship training.

Contact either Dr Berkoff at david.Berkoff@duke.edu or Dr Bytomski at bytom001@mc.duke.edu or visit the Duke Sports Medicine website for more fellowship information and sample schedules.  All fellow applicants must complete the standardized application that is available on the AMSSM website at AMSSM.org.

Duke emergency medicine residents can specialize in sports medicine through a sports medicine scholarly track, which prepares them for fellowship training after residency.
